4th Annual Payette Lake
Cardboard Boat Regatta

July 11th

On July 11th, at Legacy Park sixteen boats attempted to become the 2009 Payette Lake Cardboard Boat Champion.  It was an exciting display of craftsmanship and determination by both kids and adults. In the adult classification, the Smokejumpers “Hope” sunk in the final heat allowing “Double Down”, captained by Billy and Patrick Romero of McCall to win the “McCall Brewing Company” Adult Cardboard Boat Champion.  The kid’s division was even more exciting as four teams competed in the final race.  The Pasco Paddlers; Nick, Rengill, Owen Bintorio and Gavin Reid of Pasco, WA paddled their way to the “McCall Drug and Chapalas Mexican Restaurant” Kid’s Cardboard Boat Champion.

Double Down also won the “Idaho First Bank” Pride of Sharlie for the best looking boat among the adults.  The Return of the “Silver Bullet;” Ali, Will, Ben, Chase, Wade and Briggs Hoyt, won the “C & M Lumber” Pride of Sharlie for the best looking kid’s boat.

The McCall Smoke Jumper’s “Hope;” Steve Bierman,  Todd Franzen and Hunter Minton won the “Orbit Screen Printing and Design” Titanic Award for the adult boat that had the most spectacular sinking.  Calamity; powered by Henry and Mekena Cecil of McCall, won the “May Hardware” Titanic Award for the kids.

Before the race, spectators had the opportunity to participate in a Calcutta style auction, to bid on the boat that they thought would be crowned the 2009 Champion. George Pool of McCall was the highest bidder on the adult champion, while Nancy Cordy was the high bidder for the kid’s champion.  Both George and Nancy donated their winnings (totally $335) to AWeSOMe!

GlennKelly provided fantastic music that kept the crowds entertained.

Larry Gebert from News Channel 7 did an amazing job as the announcer for the event.
